Sometimes we, as women, just get so damn tired. Am I right?
Today was one of those days for me. The air in San Diego is not its normal cool, breezy, un-humid self. Nope. It feels like I’m down in Gulfport, Mississippi or something. No shade to Gulfport, but it would not be ideal for my post-menopausal body to exist in permanently. I honestly don’t know how older women who live there do it!
These days, I like cool and comfortable clothing and an atmosphere around me that is exactly the same.
My “What I’m NOT Gonna Do Today” List:
- I don’t want to go outside.
- I don’t want to put on make-up.
- I don’t want to exercise.
- I don’t want to cook or clean.
- I don’t want to help anyone else but me.
My “What I AM Gonna Do Today” List:
I want to put on sweats, take naps, sit in the air conditioning with my Diet Pepsi by my side, and disappear into a novel set in the 1940s. Exhibit A:

My likely candidate for the day features a cover blurb that says: “There is something of Jane Austen in this story of the deceptiveness of appearances.” Since I love Jane Austen and this is a coming-of-age story, the possibilities are quite promising.
Maybe there is some project I can do too, while watching YouTube in bed with my dogs asleep by my side. And I have absolutely no intention of feeling guilty for any of it!
The Ultimate Cosmetic Declutter
What project, you ask? Well, that is plain to see below. Did you ever have so many unsharpened eye pencils and lip liners that they became completely unusable? Or, at least, the sheer fatigue they caused just looking at them made them feel that way? Did you fall into the temptation to buy a new one, just because the ones at home were such a mess?
Don’t all answer at once. I can read your thoughts.
The chaotic state of my makeup pencils before the Sunday reset:

There is something so deeply satisfying about sharpening pencils and organizing things so that they become useful and available again. Oh, yes, now I remember—I was once a teacher’s pet, and eraser cleaning and pencil sharpening were my ultimate ego-boosting activities in second grade!
Here’s the thing – once sharpened, I know I am much more likely to pick up and use these renewed items. Their invitation becomes implicit. Those objects will literally begin to whisper my name from the vanity.
Finding Meaning in the Small Stuff:
The clutter of too many objects can make one feel overwhelmed, distracted, and lost in space. To put small things in order is to come back to earth, live simply, observe time’s passage, and know that this finite experience that is life will eventually end.
Pausing, resting, and resetting teaches us to appreciate the moment and all we have. It reminds us that everything we own will one day become donations to the Salvation Army, end up in the rubbish bin, or be cherished by someone who misses us.
But if we know what we have, we will know what we love and what we don’t want. We will use them up and have the satisfaction of finishing them—not wasting them, or our lives, away. Everything, inevitably, leads to everything.
All is right with the world once again!
