What’s a book or movie that genuinely scared you?

—

The “Silence of the Lambs,” without question.  I lived alone in a tiny apt., on East 6th Street, in the lower east side of NYC.  My apartment was dark, nearly windowless and, generally, depressing.  While watching this movie, I realized I should not be watching it alone.  I had to keep stopping it and taking a breather.

Granted, I’m a light weight when it comes to scary movies.    But, while most horror movies give you a monster that hides in the dark, this film does something much more violating: it forces you to sit in a brightly lit room and look absolute, human depravity right in the eye.

What makes it genuinely terrifying isn’t a high body count or cheap jump scares. It is the overwhelming, claustrophobic sense of psychological dread. Director Jonathan Demme uses a camera technique where the characters look almost directly into the lens during conversations. When Hannibal Lecter stands in his glass cell, unblinking, and speaks, he isn’t just looking at FBI trainee Clarice Starling—he was staring directly at you (or me back then, in my tiny apartment.)

Anthony Hopkins handles the character with such chilling, sophisticated stillness that my brain instantly flagged him as a apex predator, even when he’s completely restrained.  Being a young girl, alone in a dangerous city in those days, in my claustrophobic apartment, in the dark, to boot, was truly terrifying.

…I should watch it again, now that I’m none of those things and live in sunny Southern California in a brightly lit, Spanish/Mediterranean home I love.  I wonder if the movie would hit quite the same way?????
